Oceania- Australia, new zealand and pacific island nations

Welcome to the Oceania Region website for the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy, an international alliance of cities, local governments and their communities’ with a shared long-term vision of taking measurable action to combat climate change and make the transition to low-emission and more resilient societies. The Global Covenant now includes over 9,300 cities from 120 countries, representing over 775 million people and over 10% of the total global population, and is the largest global network of local councils taking action on climate change.

The Paris Climate Agreement aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees and is now supported by 197 nations. While national governments are beginning to understand the urgency and begin implementation, cities, local & sub national governments and communities are already rising to meet the challenge and are sending a clear message that they will be a driving force in implementation through the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy..

Implementing the Paris Agreement

Australian Consultation for Local Government Climate Action

In Australia, ICLEI Oceania is undertaking a National consultation on how the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) framework for local government can accelerate and report on local climate action in Australia. ICLEI Oceania has also engaged with Canberra Urban & Regional Futures (CURF) at the University of Canberra and other partners to provide a comprehensive approach.

The consultation will seek partnerships and alignment with National and State government policies and programs together with the range of other local climate initiatives. To meet and exceed Australia’s Paris Climate Agreement obligations, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM)  framework may be useful as a means to support and measure local efforts to reduce emissions and identify and exchange ways to adapt to climate change at the city and local level. The GCoM common reporting framework, resources, support approaches and international advocacy can offer a consistent, harmonised, measurable approach to support effective local climate responses.

The  national consultation and research is supported with funding from the European Commission.
