Darebin City Council have an ambitious target to be carbon neutral by 2020 and have launched their Climate Emergency Plan 2017-22, which recognises the current state of climate emergency and calls for urgent action to be taken. Darebin City Council is recognised as one of the first Councils in the world to declare a climate emergency. Darebin is committed to taking action in order to preserve a liveable planet for current and future generations, and is a proud signatory to the Global Covenant of Mayors.

The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy is an international alliance of cities with a shared long-term vision of promoting voluntary action to combat climate change and transition to low-emission and resilient societies. The Global Covenant now includes over 9,130 cities from 120 countries, representing over 775 million people and 10.55% of the total global population, and is the largest global network of councils leading action on climate change.
